Subject: 1 Chron. 20:3

Dear Steve Roberts,

David also commited adultery with a man's wife and then had that man killed. That does not mean the Bible is teaching that I should go out and commit adultery with some other man's wife and then have that man killed.

This passage is an example of how the Bible is true. This passage shows that David was a terrible sinner. The only reason David's could be such a terrible sinner and still went to heaven when he died was Jesus Christ's death on the cross. There is hope for the sinner if he or she repents.

Hi Vince,

Thanks for taking the time to write and tell me about David going to heaven due to his repentence and Jesus' death.

I just have a few questions I'm hoping you can help me with.

  1. How do you know that David repented? The Bible relates the scene of David on his deathbed. He does not repent, but orders his son to commit yet more murders (including one that David had previously promised never to commit). (1 Ki. 2:1-9, 2 Sam. 19:18-23)

  2. Why do you say these actions of David's were "terrible sins" when the Bible relates that God praised David as always having done "what was right in mine eyes"? (1 Kings 14:8) Why is it that except for the Uriah incident, the Bible claims that everything David did "was right in the eyes of the Lord" (1 Ki. 15:5).

  3. The people who David sawed asunder and baked in the oven: how do you think they'll react to seeing David in heaven? How will the parents of the children he killed greet David, do you suppose? (Remember: he slaughtered entire villages "leaving none left to breathe" according to the Bible.)

  4. How is this an example of "how the Bible is true"?

  5. If Hitler "repented" in his bunker just before his death, will you look forward to spending eternity with him in heaven?
