Full House Technique

Definition: A simple technique for entering a Big Number when there is only one empty cell in a lane or block.

Look For: Lanes and blocks with only one empty cell remaining.

Consequence: When only one cell remains in the row, column, or block, it's a simple matter to determine which number is missing. Fill in the missing number to complete the row, column, or block.

Why it Works: Since each lane and block must contain numbers 1-9, The missing number in that lane or block must be the number to go in its one remaining empty cell.

Full Houses initially at red circles, then at green squares, and then at purple triangle.

Here is an example with several full houses. Even though there are four empty cells in block one, we will fill them all up (along with all of vertical band 1) using only the full house technique!

Row 1 has one empty cell at B1. Scanning the row, we look for each number from 1-9 till we spot a gap in the sequence: the missing number. In this case it's the 9, so we enter a 9 in B1.

Next, we notice a single empty cell in column A: A4. We enter the missing number 6 in A4..

Block 2 has a single empty cell at F2. So we enter the missing 3 in F2..
