I've always been fascinated by chess. I volunteered as a chess coach at an elementary school for a few years.
The pages presented here are largely a result of that experience. There is a wealth of material that others in a similar
position may find helpful.
It is well known that chess can help children to develop thinking skills. It can also be used to drive home many ethical points.
The free chess lessons started out with presentations I made to the students, and have since expanded to include lessons and annotated games created by other coaches specifically for this site.
There is also a chess course consisting of 20 "belt" lessons, where you progress (as in Karate class) from a white-belt level to a brown-belt, and finally to a black-belt as you successfully complete all of the quizzes in the lessons.
Computer Chess allows you to play against a novice-level computer program.
The demo-board is useful if you have a PC projector: allowing you to setup positions more quickly, highlight squares, etc.
We also have the script for a one-act chess play suitable for a school presentation.
Finally, there is a chess-based crossword puzzle you can print out. (Answers here.)
