Why do you think that killing animals is horrible? If humans didn't release anger and hatred on animals, like we have for hundreds of years, we would release it on humans in more violent ways, such as strangling, stabbing, or using a blunt object. then what would you do about stopping that? Tie everyone to a table as soon as they are born and only let them go if they are scared to anything but what they are told to do?

Hi Joe,

Killing and violence in general are always horrible actions, whether directed at human or non-human animals. It grates against our inherent sense of empathy towards all sentient beings.

I, and millions of others, do not "release anger and hatred" on non-human animals. This does not cause us to commit violence against humans. Instead, it serves to increase our sense of caring for all.

In fact, far from providing some sort of a safety valve, there appears to be a link between violence against animals and violence against people, as several studies have shown. See, for instance, this article from the National Institute of Health.

As Rachel Carson has written:

"Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is -- whether its victim is human or animal -- we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing, we set back the progress of humanity."

Perhaps you should consider an anger-management class to help you deal with your feelings in non-destructive ways.

Peace and love,
