I've always been fascinated by chess. For the past few years I've been volunteering as a chess coach at an elementary school. The pages presented here are largely a result of that experience. There is a wealth of material that others in a similar position may find helpful.

It is well known that chess can help children to develop thinking skills. It can also be used to drive home many ethical points.

The free chess lessons started out with presentations I made to an elementary school, and have since expanded to include lessons and annotated games created by other coaches specifically for this site.

The demo-board is useful if you have a PC projector: allowing you to setup positions more quickly, highlight squares, etc.

Computer Chess allows you to play against a novice-level computer program that helps train you to write down moves and click that clock!

In our related-games section we have games that can be used in the classroom for special occassions (such as chess bingo). We have used these to award prizes for correct answers -- making it fun for the children while still teaching them chess. The "Stage a Play" is a script I wrote for a one-scene stage-play in which we dressed the children up as chess pieces to learn about positional play through their dialogue.
