  Then and Now

We lived on fiery passion then
which heated souls that walked in dreams
down shadow-mountains to a glen
where flowed, through blue, hypnotic streams,
an essence pure in liberty!
We drank the juice of freedom there
and found escape in poetry.
We lived a time beyond compare:
our souls were eyes which lit the night!
Our bodies melted into one
as we beheld the starry sight
in infinite oblivion!

And now, perchance, we meet sometimes.
In passing: nod, pretend to smile…
Forgotten are those walks and rhymes:
our words and selves go single-file.
And in the eyes we used in dreams,
and in our hearts which used to soar,
the fire of passion kicks and screams,
but heats and lights our souls no more.
